On Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service, the Digital Service Fellows cleaned up the Urban Technology Project Office and transformed it into a Computer Training Center. The group arrived to the UTP facility around noon after attending a MLK Day of Service showcase presented by West Philadelphia High School. After a quick lunch, the DSF team go to work riding the space of trash and junk. Much of the materials that were discarded were outdated computer devices and random bits of unusable furniture and other odds and ends. The team took care to ensure that all material that could be reused we kept. Cleaning out and organizing the space took the majority of the day.
Over the next few week, the DSFs team developed a number of training stations. Some of the stations included a break-fix areas where individuals could get hands on experience with troubleshooting Mac and Windows hardware issues. Due to the needs of the school sites where the fellows are stationed the majority of the week, some DSFs are unable to to receive hands on experience. The purpose of the training lab is to ensure that all apprentices leave the program with the skills they need to succeed in the IT world.
