The Urban Technology Project, US2020PHL and Skyless Games gathered on June 4th in the City’s Innovation Lab to celebrate the completion of Game Camp, a pilot mentoring project that paired video game professionals with students from High School of the Future (HSOF).
The Game Camp began in mid-march and engaged HSOF students’ interest in learning how to create video games. US2020PHL, the STEM mentoring arm of STEMcityPHL, coordinated weekly visits where video game design and production was taught by Chris and Arad, of Skyless Games. The Digital Service Fellows played a critical role by assisting the video game mentors and working directly with students to understand gaming logic, while helping the students to design and create their games.
The Game Camp concluded with an award ceremony that recognized the student’s hard work and dedication to the time consuming process of making a video game. Students and program partners gathered to listen to a panel discussion from Philadelphia-based video game professionals from companies like Cipher Prime, PHL Collective and DeerFox Games.
UTP was incredibly honored to be working with such great program partners to continue our mission to provide meaningful technology experiences to young people. We look forward to carrying this project onward and expanding STEM learning opportunities throughout Philadelphia’s schools.
